Sometimes, we stumble upon simple yet useful tips & tricks that can improve our habits and daily lives. And some of those times, those tips & tricks can not only change our daily habits, but help in achieving a greater goal.
Here is one great example.
Fish became one of the most important sources of food and income for 800 million people, mostly from developing countries. According to EUMOFA (European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products, 2017), the European Union is the biggest market and importer of seafood in the world. One of the recent projects on this topic, Fish Forward Project, had the aim of raising awareness of the social and environmental impacts of fish consumption. Project partners come from 17 countries, including European and developing countries.
People recognized that the essence of solving this global problem are customers, consumers – us. Demand for fish depends on us, and as always, the offer has to keep up with demand. If we raise our consciousness and change our habits in order to reduce the consumption of unsustainable seafood, we will indirectly affect the scale of the offer.
That is why one of the main project aims is to make customers aware that their decision to select seafood does have a real impact on the environment. Because of that, some chefs and food managers are involved in this project, who are able to include more sustainable fishery products in their menus and introduce customers with fish from sustainable sources.
The solution to the problem is not the refusal of eating any kind of seafood, but choosing to eat sustainable food – food that comes from sustainable fishing and fish farming. In other words, it is not necessary to stop catching fish, but to catch the right fish in the right amount.
